Life’s too short for a bad Old Fashioned

BOOZE: Overproof blend of Old Grand Dad and Old Ov BOOZE: Overproof blend of Old Grand Dad and Old Overholt. A bit too sharp at times for my palette but it does give a Parlour Old Fashioned a recognizable bourbon profile

FLAVOR:  The combo of Piloncillo (Mexican cane sugar) and their savvy combo of THREE flavors of bitters is why this is MN legend.

AESTHETIC: Standard barware and ice cube. I know it’s a hassle to keep track of and clean but the care put into this drink deserves a metal skewer for the cherry not a cheap tooth pick.

OVERALL: A “fan favorite” in MN for a reason! It’s elevated but every order is consistent, and you could pick it out from a blind tasting it’s such a memorable combo. Great choice to relaunch the site!

BOOZE: Back in the RUM old fashioned game: Diploma BOOZE: Back in the RUM old fashioned game: Diplomatico Resevra rum and it’s so smooth and dangerously light - if god made a better tasting rum she kept it for herself.

FLAVOR:  Another OF you are glad they don’t  sell by the carafe. Anyone sipping could use a deeper pour and a straw it’s THAT good.

AESTHETIC: So this was a shortened glass and it was weird. Literally half the neighbor s normal rocks glass. BUT WAIT there is more! A delicious slice frozen banana bread dough as an accent is a brilliant twist. Bravo

OVERALL: I enjoyed more of these Old Fashioned’s tonight than I will socially admit.  If you are in Northern UK get to Gaucho

BOOZE: Four Roses Small Batch. We enjoy Old Forres BOOZE: Four Roses Small Batch. We enjoy Old Forrester, or even Old Overholt as a base spirit but this is top shelf foundation a reasonably priced cocktail 😍

FLAVOR:  Maple syrup! Not simple, maple! Plus orange and angostura bitters. So smooth and tasty I could use just a touch more bite to make it perfect but it’s

AESTHETIC: Great ice, luxardo cherries, and wonderful cut crystal glass with a geometric “grip”. Top shelf.

OVERALL: Don’t look now but Gran Ave  in St Paul is “Old Fashioned Street” between Em Que Viet, Bar Cart, and the Lexington. 

This may be the neighborhood champion!

FLAVOR:  Very lemon forward and syrupy. I get slanging a lot of drinks but booze first is always en vogue with a Old Fashioned.0

AESTHETIC: Great ice, clear as glass with their “brand” in the bottom. You can tell they care. Only reason not “5 stars” was orange was under ripe with green peel.

FLAVOR:  A “rich” simple syrup (1.5 to 1) with a dash of amaretto gave this a very smooth and slight biscotti taste and mouth feel. Very precise (we were told) 4 dashes of angostura and 1 of Reagan’s orange bitters

AESTHETIC: The ice! We have seen many places that put a “brand” or logo in the ice - but this logo was RED! Maraschino syrup that dissolved 🤯

OVERALL: Top 3 Old Fashioned we have ever had, anywhere. Great bar in a very cool hotel. A MUST for any Louisville visit.

FLAVOR:  Demerara plus aztec AND walnut bitters on top of the bourbon infusion they should sell this by the pitcher. The walnut flavor as well is wholly unique in our travels and sips and we enjoy it immensely.

BOOZE: House blend and a secret but definitely was BOOZE: House blend and a secret but definitely wasn’t overproof 🥃🥃🥃🥃

FLAVOR: The house blend was mixed with jaggery, a sugar common to the Indian subcontinent, curry, and angostura bitters. Wow what a sipper! Or should I say gulper! Hard to find a “new” approach to old fashioned flavor profile but they succeeded. 🥃🥃🥃🥃🥃

AESTHETIC: There were two square cubes, about 1.5” I. The narrow glass base meant one sat on top of the other, and ice would rub up against your nose with every sip. Super awkward and made for poor experience . 🥃🥃

OVERALL: Delicious cocktail at a great new Uptown Mpls business (great pizza too!). Awesome bar staff just ask for one ice cube! 🥃🥃🥃🥃

FLAVOR: We weren’t sure what to make of the bonji syrup but wowza was this Ben of the tastiest old fashioneds we have ever had. The bonji really added flavor depth we could drink these from a carafe.

AESTHETIC: The orange was pinned to the cocktail so we could apply as wanted an usual presentation but we loved it. The bonji syrup is what provides the darker color 🥃🥃🥃🥃

OVERALL: One of the top 5 old fashioneds we have ever had, period. Worth a visit when you are in NYC (also amazing ramen and pork buns!) 🥃🥃🥃🥃🥃

FLAVOR: The Orange liqueur was a touch too much for our tastes but we see how this a profile many may enjoy .

AESTHETIC: For a bar that has been opened and closed (The Artists Quarter, Vieux Carre, now KJs Hideway) the fact they still have bar ware is a win!. 🥃🥃🥃🥃

OVERALL: Without question the best room for live jazz (and therefore cocktails) in MN. Welcome back! 🥃🥃🥃🥃

OVERALL: this is a destination old fashioned - the lounge is better than the bar, the rooftop better than both!  Absolute rock star and super consistent (we have enjoyed many times just late with the rating). Check this one out.

BOOZE: We were offered bourbon or rye or scotch?! 👀👀 I have never had a scotch old fashioned anyways we ordered bourbon. 🥃🥃🥃

FLAVOR: No idea on any of the ingredients we were on the patio but this was classic Sconnie style so bourbon, simple syrup, orange slice, bitters, and a small dash of water. Classics are classic for a reason 🥃🥃🥃

AESTHETIC: much like the state itself not that much aesthetically pleasing about a Sconnie style old fashioned: utilitarian all the way 🥃 🥃 

OVERALL: this isn’t a spot known for the cocktail program (and that’s ok!) but the sweetness and brightness of the Sconnie style goes well with their wings which are the best in Mpls! 🥃🥃🥃

BOOZE: Banana and Cinnamon infused Makers Mark is just stupid tasty. They shared how they infused it and we are committed to try

FLAVOR: “I could order this in a carafe” was my quote after round 3. Demerara syrup and the chocolate butters made this lean in as far as a cocktail can without being a liquid dessert. Really an outlier in the Old Fashioned taste profile but sinfully delicious. 🥃🥃🥃🥃🥃

AESTHETIC:  Standard barware and ice  ice. Definitely didn’t match the effort infusion and prep to make such an shockingly tasty cocktail 🥃🥃🥃

OVERALL: We at the Old Fashioned project are deeply saddened of the closure of this great MSP restaurant. This cocktail is on the deep list of many great things we tasted there.  Look forward to the bar crew’s next spots and hopefully someone revives this legendary cocktail! 🥃🥃🥃🥃🥃

FLAVOR: So this drink is called the Mannfashion, and was described as a “mashup of an Old Fashioned and Manhattan” which seemed curious. Honestly tended towards Manhattan that wasn’t quite there (stuck in Jersey City?!). No citrus and I couldn’t detect a sugar. Did detect a touch of red vermouth and the Tattersall cherries were delicious! Seemed like a concept not quite sorted? 🥃🥃🥃

AESTHETIC:  Standard barware and the cube ice with the holes in the middle.  The front patio is lovely though! 🥃🥃

OVERALL: So I came here for escargot and Pinot Blanc, and will stick with that. Maybe it was just an off pour (it happens) but this to me wasn’t “old fashioned” enough in taste or spirit for the name. Not a bad sipper but we are running a specific review site here! 🥃🥃

FLAVOR: Cognac forward but nice balance. Essence of lime leaf, light amount of Demerara simple, and “ancient Chinese bitters” (which I assume is Mr Lee’s since it’s made nearby) balances citrus and a little anise and peppercorn spice. Luxardo cherry always a winner 🥃🥃🥃🥃

AESTHETIC:  Standard barware and but a gorgeous ice cube so clear I thought it was fake. 🥃🥃🥃🥃

OVERALL: Cognac, hint of lime and spice—way outside the box with old fashioned flavor profiles and this one is worth it. (And their seafood boil is killer!) 🥃🥃🥃🥃

The overproof Grandad gives a kick 🥃🥃🥃🥃 FLAVOR: classic old fashioned flavors with Demerara simple and angostura bitters. Classics for a reason right?! 🥃🥃🥃 AESTHETIC:  Standard barware and but a lot of ice which watered things down (we don’t drink em as fast as we used to). 🥃🥃🥃 OVERALL: Nice classic version with a little bonus of a great whiskey blend.
